Craftsmanship Sash Windows Hove provides a complete service for any kind of sash window problem. Our involvement in the Brighton windows industry pre-dates 1998.
Expert Rot and Timber Repairs are carried out by our qualified and experienced joiner using traditional joining techniques. Our joiner craftsman also inspects the job from the very outset - we do not send a separate estimator to inspect your windows and window labourers to carry out the work. We also do not carry out budget bog/filler type repairs. Most of our work comes from recommendation. We are a small family business and we like to keep it that way, ensuring that our work is only ever carried out to the standard that we command.
Many of the UK's timber box sash windows have fallen into a state of disrepair due to many years of use and our harsh winter climate. Common problems include stuck sashes, rotten timbers, broken sash cords and drafty, rattly sash windows. Regular maintenance and servicing of traditional sash windows can overcome these problems and ensure that these original period features function efficiently for many years to come, and continue to add value, character and charm to our historical period buildings. The following is a list of the sash window services we provide:
Sash Window Servicing
Craftsmanship Sash Window Servicing is a service to maintain your sash windows, and to restore poorly functioning windows to full operational order.
Servicing includes:
Easing Sashes
Tightening any Loose Joints
Overhauling Pulleys
New Glass Putties if loose or broken
New Waxed Sash Cords
Re-alignment and balancing of Sashes to ensure proper functioning
New Staff Beads (Closing Beads)
New Parting Beads
Draught Proofing (Draft Proofing)
At Craftsmanship Sash Windows we pride ourselves on using only premium quality products. The polypropylene brush draught proofing system that we supply is used throughout the world in sliding sash windows, includes an additional central fin for extra draught resistance, and is recognised as being the 'best product' for draught proofing in sliding applications. The brush is machined into the Staff Beads, Parting Beads and Meeting Rail to create a constant cushion against the sash. The brush draught proofing system has been proven to reduce draughts (drafts), outside noise and rattling; enable a smoother sliding action, and improve energy efficiency.
Repairs and Replacements
Expert Rot and Timber Repairs are carried out by our qualified and experienced joiner using traditional joining techniques.
Where a Sash or a Cill (Sill) has deterioriated beyond economic repair, replacements are made that authentically match the originals - made from selected softwood or hardwood and expertly crafted using the traditional techniques of our experienced craftsman.
Transform your windows into a a real eye-catching feature with our range of high quality window fittings including centre catches, sash lifts and locks. Supplied and fitted, choose from polished brass, chrome or satin nickel.
We also supply complete new Box Sash Windows to authentically match the originals. Where a completely new window is being installed, you will need to either obtain Building Regulation Approval from the Council or ensure that your window fitter is FENSA registered. Different rules apply for Conservation Areas and also Listed Buildings. We are not a FENSA registered business since we specialise in the restoration of 'existing' sash windows. However, our 'supply only' service for high quality box sash windows is very popular with clients who prefer to use a FENSA registered fitter rather than applying for Building Regulation Approval.
Glazing
We replace any broken or inferior quality glass at competitive prices. New sashes are also glazed before fitting.
Decoration
During our Sash Window Servicing, we make every effort not to interfere with your paintwork. However, any flaking or loose paint on the sashes will be scraped back and any built up paint which may be hindering sash functioning may also be stripped away. Any bare timber will be protected and primed. Where we are fitting a New Sash, this will be primed to give temporary protection from moisture. Newly Serviced Sash Windows and New Sashes should ideally be decorated within 8 - 10 weeks to ensure your windows look their best. Your Decorator should be instructed to: use a good quality paint, ensure that paint is not applied to the sash cords or draught proofing brushes, that sashes are not painted in, and that the windows remain fully functioning once the painting process is complete.
Planning Permission and Building Regulation Approval
Sash Window Servicing and New Replacement Sashes do not require Council approval. However, where we are replacing glass in a sash (above ground floor level) where the bottom of the glass is within 800mm of floor level, the Council does require that safety glass is installed. Where a window is being modified, we recommend you seek the advice of your local Council. Where a completely new window is being installed, you will need to either obtain Building Regulation Approval from the Council or ensure that your window fitter is FENSA registered. Different rules apply for Listed Buildings. We are not a FENSA registered business since we specialise in the restoration of 'existing' sash windows. Whilst we are happy to provide general advice regarding Council regulations, such advice is given for guideline purposes only and clients remain responsible for ensuring that any works they have carried out to their windows are permitted by their local Council.
'' There are many Sash Window Operators in the UK market place who may not be Qualified Carpenter & Joiners. Some are qualified but not experienced, some are qualified but not necessarily skilled. There are others who are perhaps neither and have received standard company training.
Traditional Timber Sash Windows are an historical period feature and their repair commands the skill and craftsmanship of experienced Carpenter Joiners who affiliate with timber through their years of study, training, experience and natural skill & flair for woodworking. These people may not be the cheapest. And they may also not be the most expensive. They are the people who are deservedly The Timber Experts, the cost-effective - who can guarantee that their work will stand the test of time. ''
